Chinese New Year 2012 Jakarta

Happy Chinese New Year 2012 Folks! This is happened on the 23rd January this year and many chinese people are celebrating. The chinese people usually celebrate their new year with families and they visit each other cousin, relatives and family this time of the year. When they visit, the custom is to give a hongbao or red envelope with money inside for the people who haven't married including children by the married people. This red envelope symbolizes good luck. Also the customary thing about chinese people is to have a feast in their house with plenty of food for their incoming guest.

Chinese New Year's Eve

Chinese people usually began the night before with a dinner feast with their core family at home or restaurant. For me this year we have a simple shabu-shabu at home because there is only a four of us, my sister already move out with her husband.

The next day we started visiting our families and relatives. That's means house hopping and plenty of eating and socializing. =) There are just a non stop eating from morning till night. And a lot of hongbao too.

This year I can say that most places that I visited are serving Indonesian food. Usually there is an altar in front of their house if they are a buddhist and on the evening you can occasionally see an attraction of Barongsai or lion dance in front of their house. It's purpose is to attract luck and ward of evil.
